Guardian glass for the Lyon Hotel Dieu
Guardian Glass was specified for almost all parts of the buildings, notably the new Canopée (skylight) and the buildings’ double skin facades.
The Grand Hôtel-Dieu was originally a public hospital that operated for more than eight centuries in the city of Lyon. In 2018, after six years of renovation, the hotel is deemed a Monument Historique (national heritage site) and is considered the most important privately-led conversion project of an historic monument in France. In addition to the luxury hotel, it houses boutiques, offices and restaurants, as well as the now public historical gardens.
Didier Repellin, from the architectural firm RL & Associés, oversaw the project. As honorary Chief Architect of Historical Monuments and a member of the French Heritage Society (among other titles), he was the perfect choice for the renovation of the buildings and the grounds. His vision was to make use of the history of the city to embellish the ancient buildings and has done so by respecting the history of the Hôtel-Dieu while giving back the grounds to the inhabitants of Lyon.
Guardian Glass was specified for almost all parts of the buildings, notably the new Canopée (skylight) and the buildings’ double skin facades. Made with Guardian SunGuard® SN 70/37 Ultra, the Canopée overlooks the inner courtyard and gives light to the renovation works, while the windows and facades of the hotel and boutiques have all been fitted with Guardian SunGuard® HD Neutral 67 to allow for an ideal balance between light transmission and solar factor.

1/Reasons and advantages for glass chemical tempering
The chemical tempering is used when the thermal tempering meets some limits. It is the case for :
-Small glass thickness
Even if some suppliers offer now machines able to temper 2 mm thickness glass, the chemical tempering in this case give better results.
-Curved glass
The chemical tempering is done with a temperature around 400°C which don’t change the glass geometrical shape
This is particularly important when teh curved glass has to be laminated after tempering.
-The optical quality
Chemical tempering gives better result than thermal tempering when a high optical quality is required.
-More important hardness required
The chemical tempering increases between 4 and 10 times the hardness obtained from thermal tempering.
-No glass surface distorsions.

-Glass processing after tempering
After glass chemical tempering, glass processing is possible ‘ edging, drilling, polishing, engraving, sandblasting….). This is not possible after thermical tempering.
Why use refrigerant in water tanks?

Flat glass shaping: Synthetic coolants improve the break-in of glass.
When shaping flat glass with diamond tools the use of synthetic coolants (without mineral oils) offers many advantages. In this article, Dr. Michael Emonds * provides specific insights into the process of glass break-in, gives the different characteristics of coolants and how they improve the effectiveness of lapping and drilling.
Coolants can be classified in relation to their behavior with water. While mineral oil coolants are not water soluble, synthetic coolers are, which will increase their efficiency. They consist of a mixture of organic and inorganic products without any addition of mineral oils.

Primary and secondary functions can be distinguished.
The main characteristic of a coolant is to lower the temperature of the tool and glass during shaping, to reduce friction, to facilitate the removal of glass and to move the removed glass particles out of the air. shaping area (glass contact and tool).
The secondary functions have an influence on the operation of the machine. A coolant can for example help to fight against corrosion, stabilize the pH and act on the shaping residues (silica, generated by the abrasion of the glass by the diamond tool).
Drilling or prowling the glass means working on a fragile material with diamond tools. This material removal system requires a means for lowering the temperature and moving away waste generated by shaping the work area. The oil is often used for such an operation. However, arguments can be made in favor of water.
But meeting today the imperatives of quality and productivity using only water is not possible. Coolant must be added. This product consists of different components that bring various characteristics to the product. Surfactants for example lubricate the contact between the tool and the material and give better wettability to the removed glass particles. Other organic or inorganic additives fight against corrosion and act as a biocide or stabilize ph (buffer solutions). Additives often have many of these functions.
Functions of surfactants
Surfactants are products that are very often present in products used daily for cleaning. The same type of molecules is present in modern coolants.
Chemically surfactants are long hydrophobic chains with hydrophilic ends. The ends of the molecules inter-react with the water and the hydrophobic part reacts with the mineral oils or residues. Due to this composition, the hydrophobic parts are rendered soluble in water.

- Considering 2% of oil and increasing the hardness of the water, the absorption increases only on the 1st millstone until the hardness of 40 ° F approximately, above which the amperage (which allows measure the power demanded from the grinding wheel) remains constant.
- In the absence of oil, by increasing the hardness of the water, ammeters increase linearly.
- Therefore it is deduced that in the presence of fresh water the increase in the oil concentration results in a reduction of the amperage with an absolute value much less important than everything that has been verified in the presence of water with hardness above 40 ° F. So, in the case of amperage problems, first check the hardness of the water. In case of high hardness, the percentage of cutting oil added to the water of the tanks will have to increase more than in the case of fresh water.
Edge quality based on working speed and coolant concentration.

In the miroiterie for ten years, the new leader defines herself as "atypical". After a master's degree in economics and ten years in an accounting firm, she joined GBM, a manufacturer of Cekal-certified insulating glass units, PVC joiners from the Rehau range and Technal certified aluminum manufacturer in Limoges (87). She will be the administrative and financial director for three years.
"After the judicial liquidation of GBM we took over the company in the form of cooperative, with colleagues who appointed me manager," she explains. GBM had a turnover of four million euros with 40 employees in 2017, but after five years as head of the company, it resigned, perhaps a bit cramped with the decision-making procedures inherent to S.C.O.P. The entrepreneur then embarked on an e-commerce project in the miroiterie. Employee director of the company, the relations with the shareholders do not leave him the decision space that it expected. "In January 2018, I found myself unemployed and I decided to be alone at the helm this time, and to look for a company to take over."
A drumming drive

The company is not in trouble; taken over 12 years ago, it achieves a turnover of 1.2 million euros with 10 employees but its leaders want to change their life at the dawn of their 40 years. Now I know the miroiterie and the carpentry alu: we immediately spoke the same language, we talked about building sites, suppliers, products, achievements, problems of customers and when we speak the same language it sticks immediately "explains t ' she.
Key objective for the coming year: "rehabilitate the production tool". Purchase premises, equip them with tools and set up a team. From the point of view of hiring a journeyman apprentice, aged 16, has just joined the troops a week after taking office Dorothée Leneuf-Blaise who welcomes it because train and transmit the know-how is part of his ambitions.

Fire at the Mirror Factory Strippoli in Isère
About thirty firefighters converged Monday night in Crolles to extinguish a fire that was declared around 21 hours in a glazier-glazing company.

From a small family store, opened in the city center of the Cantal prefecture in the 1950s, the Miroiterie Laumond has today become a society with national influence.
Sixty years later, it employs twenty-eight people in its 3.500 m2, boulevard du Vialenc, in Aurillac, and generated a turnover of € 7 million last year.

When Michel Gennai took over the company, it then realized 90% of its turnover at the local level.
