Sandblasting on glass

Definition

Sandblasting is a process of etching and etching obtained by projection of a jet of sand (corundum) very powerful (jet of compressed air) on a glass. The grains of sand create small cavities. This makes it possible to obtain a frosted or satin effect, to write and draw patterns on the glass and even to drill and carve it.

The process: (1870)

A violent jet of corundum sand is projected onto the surface of the glass with a compressed air gun. This projection of grains attacks the material giving a frosted appearance. The intensity of the frost varies with the duration of the application of the jet. The work is carried out in an airtight place to avoid inhalation of dust: either in a sandblasting booth where only the hands penetrate with gloves or automatically; either in a room (room) sanding for larger jobs where the user is protected by a combination.

The technique :

A stencil is cut manually according to the desired pattern. The parts of the glass that will not be sanded are called "reserves". For unit work, a sufficiently strong self-adhesive paper (adhesive film) is used. For series work, either a metal stencil (brass, zinc, copper) or a rubber stencil is used.

Factors that may vary the effects of sanding:

• Grain size

• Diameter of the nozzle

• Compressed air pressure

• Impact distance

• Jet orientation

Application :

The decoration by sanding allows to treat a wide range of materials such as glass, crystal, marble, copper, wood, jewelry, ceramics. The aesthetic effects produced by sanding are multiple:

• blurs or satin transparency

• modulation in the scattering of light

• creating a "soft" effect on the skin of the glass

• possibility of introducing extremely precise graphic elements (legends, logos, lines) on the surface of the glass.

• in the stained glass practice, artistic rendering is carried out with veneered glass by eliminating the colored veneer layer in order to reveal the basic glass with a clear colored tendency.

Merging in the field of aluminum and PVC joinery for windows and openings in France

The two groups Bouvet and FPEE, among the most important industrialists of the window market have decided to get closer

The two players who achieve a comparable turnover give birth to the number two market with a projected turnover of about 300 million euros, 1500 employees and a production of half a million carpentry .

For FPEE, this alliance also signifies the exit of minority financiers in its capital: entered during 2015, Siparex and Arkéa Capital Investissement said in a statement, December 3, that they "will give up their participation on the occasion of the merger of FPEE with the family business Bouvet ". Finalized in principle in January 2019, this "industrial merger" is still subject to the "agreement of the Competition Authority".

Glaston Corporation strengthens its position as a leading player in the glass processing technology market.

Strange and not to say surprising decision. Recall that a 2003, Glaston which was called at that time Tamglass had bought the Italian leader of flat glass forming machines Bavelloni and its distribution subsidiary Glasto. This buy-out, which was to build the undisputed leader in this market, ended ten years later with the resale of Bavelloni, which had grown from more than 600 employees to less than 200, with a sharp decline in value due to a lack of success. the merger of the two companies and after a cascade of leaders who will succeed at Glaston.

The resale of the grinding unit which, during the 2003 buyout, was a technological gem with a very strong profitability was made a few weeks ago.

Same with the purchase of Albat and Wirsam and its resale a few years later.

Glaston Corporation has signed an agreement to acquire the Bystronic glass Group. The globally operating high-end machinery, systems and services provider for the processing of flat glass is currently owned by Swiss industrial holding company Conzzeta AG.

Bystronic glass has a comprehensive range of products, highly complementary to Glaston’s, for the Architectural, Automotive and Display markets.

Vandalism during demonstrations in France

During the demonstrations of yellow vests, acts of vandalism have multiplied in several large cities. Shop windows were broken, at a frequency never before seen by glazier professionals. So much so that everything can not be repaired quickly.

In the hours following the days of demonstrations the streets of the big cities were cleared of garbage cans and cars burned during the demonstrations. But the many broken windows still bear witness to the violence that has reigned. Glazing professionals speak of an unprecedented level: "It's chaos, we've never faced such damage." Usually when there are demonstrations, the procession moves from one place to another. point A to point B, and it is especially the shopkeepers at the end of the circuit who are subjected to acts of vandalism, where the damage is spread over many streets, "says Alexandre Costa, vice president of the union of glass installers flat (UDIVP) which brings together nearly 250 companies. "Last weekend, we had already had some requests, but it is really since Monday morning that we feel a certain panic. We had calls from merchants installed rue de la Boetie or on the boulevard Haussmann (Editor's note: in the 8th arrondissement of Paris) ", abounds the manager of BH Vitrier Paris.

For traders, the urgency is to secure their shops. Shop window installers are therefore asked first to install plywood sheets, a first step before handing new windows.

Turn to insurers

The UDIVP fears that in a rush, some traders will appeal to companies that improvise glazier. "The professionals are mobilized, but the demand is strong, they will first favor their usual customers. Some traders can then appeal to building companies or auto-entrepreneurs who do not necessarily have the skills or practice of tariffs too high, "warns the vice president of the UDIVP. Some rumors also run that the costs will be borne by the state, which may push merchants to accept any rates while they will never be reimbursed.

His advice: turn to his insurer, who will provide the approach to follow and give them the addresses of professionals who apply agreed rates that will be covered by their insurance. Because the replacement of a showcase represents a budget, especially for high-end glasses. "For shops on the Champs-Elysées or Avenue Montaigne, they are anti-reflection or burglar-proof glasses that are used, which can cost between 15,000 to 20,000 euros," said Alexandre Costa.

Some traders are waiting to see the rest of the movement

Faced with this unprecedented demand, it is not the supply of glass that will cause concern, but rather the availability of glaziers to carry out the projects. Some will call on temporary workers to replace them as soon as possible. But some traders had to wait and spend the holiday season with plywood plates as a showcase.

And then some traders play caution. "I have customers who do not want to proceed with the installation of the new window, they are waiting to see what is planned for the next weekend, so as not to have to replace it twice in a row" , testifies the manager of BH Vitrier Paris.

Confirmed by science: France saves heating and cooling costs with the warm edge

New study can support window manufacturers when providing advice and

making sales

Kreuzlingen/Switzerland, November 2018. A scientific study now shows with concrete figures how much heating and cooling costs French home-owners and tenants can save with plastic spacer bars in the insulating glass in heat insulating windows. Three reference cities that represent the three different climates in France were chosen: Nancy for the cool-temperate climate, La Rochelle for the warm-temperate climate and Nice for the warm climate zone.

The new study of the independent Passive House Institute also calculates the savings of heating and cooling energy and CO2 emissions of entire buildings thanks to the small, efficient component. The results confirm the great benefits of high-quality plastic spacer bars compared with spacers made of aluminium. Window builders can use the study when advising customers and making sales.

According to the study, end customers can pay so much less in heating costs that a window with a warm edge is worthwhile, despite the slightly higher purchase price. For window builders and insulating glass manufacturers, this offers an economic opportunity, as high-quality plastic spacer bars are only slightly more expensive per linear metre to purchase than spacer bars made of aluminium.

The new study by the Passive House Institute was the first to investigate the influence of the spacer bars on the annual heating requirements of buildings: The study compares aluminium, stainless steel and plastic spacer bars in the windows of common houses that meet the requirements of the French energy standards in three different climate zones.  The results: If high-quality plastic spacer bars are used instead of aluminium spacer bars, in the cool-temperate climate in Nancy, 5.9 percent of the total heating energy can be saved in a standard French house with double glazing. With a conventional house with ever more commonly used triple glazing, as much as 7.9 percent can be saved, and in a building following the Passive House standard, the savings are nearly 18 percent.

In the warm-temperate climate zone in La Rochelle, in the case of a typical country house with double glazing, the savings are 4.2 percent, with 5.7 percent savings in a house with triple glazing and in the passive house, over 13 percent can be saved.

In the warm climate of Nice, in addition to the 49.6 kWh/(m²a) annual heating requirement with aluminium spacer bars, there is also a useful cooling requirement – energy needed for cooling provided by the air conditioning unit in summer – of 33.3 kWh/(m²a) at 20 °C maximum internal temperature.

The energy savings are lower in comparison to the climates where only heating is required, with savings of up to 3.8 percent by using the plastic spacer bar instead of the aluminium spacer, but a maximum of just under 9 percent in the passive house.

Small component, big impact

In modern heat insulating windows, after the glass and frame, the spacer bar is the third important component in terms of the energy performance. The spacer bar is now really becoming the centre of attention. If the spacer bar has a poor – i.e. high – heat transmission coefficient, a lot of heat is lost to the outside – even with an excellent frame and high-tech glass. Even with the plastic spacer bars, there are big differences in the performance values: A highly efficient warm edge, as used in the study, has a linear thermal conductivity of 0.14 W/(mK). The value for stainless steel is 0.6 and for the aluminium spacer bar – the clear back marker – it is a massive 160 W/(mK).

The fact that aluminium spacer bars are still being used is down to the price above all. Some insulating glass manufacturers process several millions of linear metres every year. The cents per metre saved in the purchase price of aluminium spacer bars are therefore the argument used in the purchasing decision and the price war. The new study can give the manufacturers some important backup here, as it proves the cash benefits available to customers and consumers by using the higher-quality insulating glass with the warm edge.

“Essentially, the aluminium should be banned. The positive effect on living quality that the warm edge in the insulating glass has is so great that it has to become the conventional system", said Prof. Wolfgang Feist from the Passive House Institute at the SWISSPACER "fenestra-vision" symposium in Strasbourg. Because alongside the energy savings and aesthetics, spacer bars made from plastic also offer more living comfort: the temperatures on the inside of the windows remain pleasant even in the winter. In addition, the warm edge prevents the build-up of condensation at the edge of the glass, reducing the risk of mould there.

The study was commissioned by SWISSPACER, one of the producers of warm edge spacer bars. “With the scientific investigation by an independent research institute, we wanted resilient data for the market," stressed Andreas Geith, Managing Director of SWISSPACER.

The energy transition tax credit for window changes in France

Good news for professionals in the window and for individuals! Minister of Ecological Transition François de Rugy announced that the government would reconsider the energy transition tax credit to take into account the changes of windows.

According to him, the government will continue to work for energy savings. It's "probably where we have the greatest margins of progress," he says. "A more efficient device than in the past". "We will reconsider the energy transition tax credit for window changes", this file "has been much debated for a year with building professionals." He was "on hold" when he arrived at the ministry. The minister promises "a more efficient device than in the past (...) an aid for those who pass window (s) in single glazed window (s) double glazing", stating that this aid will be capped at 100 euros per window

Guardian glass for the Lyon Hotel Dieu

Guardian Glass was specified for almost all parts of the buildings, notably the new Canopée (skylight) and the buildings’ double skin facades.

The Grand Hôtel-Dieu was originally a public hospital that operated for more than eight centuries in the city of Lyon. In 2018, after six years of renovation, the hotel is deemed a Monument Historique (national heritage site) and is considered the most important privately-led conversion project of an historic monument in France. In addition to the luxury hotel, it houses boutiques, offices and restaurants, as well as the now public historical gardens.

Didier Repellin, from the architectural firm RL & Associés, oversaw the project. As honorary Chief Architect of Historical Monuments and a member of the French Heritage Society (among other titles), he was the perfect choice for the renovation of the buildings and the grounds. His vision was to make use of the history of the city to embellish the ancient buildings and has done so by respecting the history of the Hôtel-Dieu while giving back the grounds to the inhabitants of Lyon.

Guardian Glass was specified for almost all parts of the buildings, notably the new Canopée (skylight) and the buildings’ double skin facades. Made with Guardian SunGuard® SN 70/37 Ultra, the Canopée overlooks the inner courtyard and gives light to the renovation works, while the windows and facades of the hotel and boutiques have all been fitted with Guardian SunGuard® HD Neutral 67 to allow for an ideal balance between light transmission and solar factor.

Glass chemical tempering

1/Reasons and advantages for glass chemical tempering

The chemical tempering is used when the thermal tempering meets some limits. It is the case for :

-Small glass thickness

Even if some suppliers offer now machines able to temper 2 mm thickness glass, the chemical tempering in this case give better results.

-Curved glass

The chemical tempering is done with a temperature around 400°C which don’t change the glass geometrical shape

This is particularly important when teh curved glass has to be laminated after tempering.

-The optical quality

Chemical tempering gives better result than thermal tempering when a high optical quality is required.

-More important hardness required

The chemical tempering increases between 4 and 10 times the hardness obtained from thermal tempering.

-No glass surface distorsions.

Chemical tempering avoid the surface distorsions

-Glass  processing after tempering

After glass chemical tempering, glass processing is possible ‘ edging, drilling, polishing, engraving, sandblasting….). This is not possible after thermical tempering.

Why use refrigerant in water tanks?

Take the next test. Note the level of the amperage of the diamond pins on your straight, without refrigerant, then start adding a little refrigerant while your rectilinear shapes the glass. You will quickly notice that the amperage level is decreasing, proof that the demand for power to the pins is lower and therefore that the shaping is done more efficiently.

The break-in of the glass by the diamond grinding wheels raises the temperature of the glass and grinding stones by several hundred degrees. It is therefore imperative to reduce this temperature to eliminate the risk of breakage of the glass and faster wear of the grinding wheels. Usually the cooling is done by injection of water on contact with glass grinding wheels in the compartments of the grinding wheels.

Below you will find an article written about it by one of the world's leading specialists in this field.

Flat glass shaping: Synthetic coolants improve the break-in of glass.

When shaping flat glass with diamond tools the use of synthetic coolants (without mineral oils) offers many advantages. In this article, Dr. Michael Emonds * provides specific insights into the process of glass break-in, gives the different characteristics of coolants and how they improve the effectiveness of lapping and drilling.

Coolants can be classified in relation to their behavior with water. While mineral oil coolants are not water soluble, synthetic coolers are, which will increase their efficiency. They consist of a mixture of organic and inorganic products without any addition of mineral oils.

The different functions of a modern synthetic coolant.

Primary and secondary functions can be distinguished.

The main characteristic of a coolant is to lower the temperature of the tool and glass during shaping, to reduce friction, to facilitate the removal of glass and to move the removed glass particles out of the air. shaping area (glass contact and tool).

The secondary functions have an influence on the operation of the machine. A coolant can for example help to fight against corrosion, stabilize the pH and act on the shaping residues (silica, generated by the abrasion of the glass by the diamond tool).

Drilling or prowling the glass means working on a fragile material with diamond tools. This material removal system requires a means for lowering the temperature and moving away waste generated by shaping the work area. The oil is often used for such an operation. However, arguments can be made in favor of water.

But meeting today the imperatives of quality and productivity using only water is not possible. Coolant must be added. This product consists of different components that bring various characteristics to the product. Surfactants for example lubricate the contact between the tool and the material and give better wettability to the removed glass particles. Other organic or inorganic additives fight against corrosion and act as a biocide or stabilize ph (buffer solutions). Additives often have many of these functions.

Functions of surfactants

Surfactants are products that are very often present in products used daily for cleaning. The same type of molecules is present in modern coolants.

Chemically surfactants are long hydrophobic chains with hydrophilic ends. The ends of the molecules inter-react with the water and the hydrophobic part reacts with the mineral oils or residues. Due to this composition, the hydrophobic parts are rendered soluble in water.

Influence of refrigerant concentration and water quality

Influence of the refrigerant concentration on the work of the diamond grinding wheels during the shaping of the flat glass, also taking into account the hardness of the water

The refrigerant is to be compared to a cutting oil in mechanics, one of whose main objectives is to cool during shaping (contact of the tool with glass) glass and grinding wheel.

Refrigerants on the market also include additives with other functions but not directly related to the work of the tool.

Results of tests performed on Bovone 371 beveler by varying the percentages of oil, the hardness of the water

- In case of fresh water (<25 ° F) the concentration of the cutting oil (refrigerant) continuously influences the work of the 1st grinding wheel. The decrease of the amperage compared to a 1% increase of the oil is equal to 0.3 A.

- In case of hard water (32 ° F) the cutting oil continuously influences the work of the first two grinding wheels much more important than in the previous case. The decrease in amperage compared to a 1% increase in oil is equal to 0.6 A.

- Considering 2% of oil and increasing the hardness of the water, the absorption increases only on the 1st millstone until the hardness of 40 ° F approximately, above which the amperage (which allows measure the power demanded from the grinding wheel) remains constant.

- In the absence of oil, by increasing the hardness of the water, ammeters increase linearly.

- Therefore it is deduced that in the presence of fresh water the increase in the oil concentration results in a reduction of the amperage with an absolute value much less important than everything that has been verified in the presence of water with hardness above 40 ° F. So, in the case of amperage problems, first check the hardness of the water. In case of high hardness, the percentage of cutting oil added to the water of the tanks will have to increase more than in the case of fresh water.

Edge quality based on working speed and coolant concentration.

On a drill Bystronic PBM 97 holes were made with a forest Wendt Boart drill DB

FC 191 and the quality of the edge has been controlled by a graphics software.

By increasing the piercing speed the quality of the edge decreases. But with 4% coolant the quality of the edge of the hole is better than using just water.

An additional increase in coolant concentration increases quality again especially at high cutting speed

Miroiterie & Carpentry Aunis

Renamed Miroiterie & Carpentry Aunis, the company located in Lagord (17) near La Rochelle, was inaugurated on November 15 with a new logo, a new visual identity, a new website and a new leader that we have interviewed at the end of his first day of recovery in early October.

Journey of an entrepreneur of the mirror-joinery

" I am happy ; it's going well and I'm in my element "congratulates Dorothée Leneuf-Blaise at the end of her first day of recovery. In the miroiterie for ten years, the new leader defines herself as "atypical". After a master's degree in economics and ten years in an accounting firm, she joined GBM, a manufacturer of Cekal-certified insulating glass units, PVC joiners from the Rehau range and Technal certified aluminum manufacturer in Limoges (87). She will be the administrative and financial director for three years.

"After the judicial liquidation of GBM we took over the company in the form of cooperative, with colleagues who appointed me manager," she explains. GBM had a turnover of four million euros with 40 employees in 2017, but after five years as head of the company, it resigned, perhaps a bit cramped with the decision-making procedures inherent to S.C.O.P. The entrepreneur then embarked on an e-commerce project in the miroiterie. Employee director of the company, the relations with the shareholders do not leave him the decision space that it expected. "In January 2018, I found myself unemployed and I decided to be alone at the helm this time, and to look for a company to take over."

A drumming drive

Originally from New Aquitaine, this region will focus his research. "On the BPI website, there is a business transfer and takeover announcement service. I answered one of them which indicated "joineries aluminum and miroiterie, a true know-how". I sent my resume, signed the confidentiality undertaking; I knew they were at La Rochelle and Aluminiers Charged Technal: it's an image, a commercial force, a technical know-how and I was myself in Limoges, I knew very well the product, the provider. So I visited the miroiterie early May.

The company is not in trouble; taken over 12 years ago, it achieves a turnover of 1.2 million euros with 10 employees but its leaders want to change their life at the dawn of their 40 years. Dorothée Leneuf-Blaise, who has 42, signs an agreement at the beginning of the summer, "the time to set up the structure, to find funding".

Winner of the Réseau Entreprendre, which supports and accompanies it as well as Initiative Charente-Maritime, she was able to benefit from loans and also integrate local networks: "I do not know La Rochelle and a woman who buys a mirror company- carpentry there is not every day so I had to reassure employees as well as my financial and institutional partners that I had come to live in La Rochelle, that I was not there to manage a two days a week, "says the manager.

Give a new impetus to the company

After a phase of observation in the field last September, the roadmap of the new leader is clear: revitalize the company, modernize its image, give it a new impetus. "I presented my roadmap to employees. I presented them with a new logo, a new visual identity, they had an immediate overview of the image I wanted to give to the company. And they are very happy, very active, they got to work right away. The obsession of the employees of a company taken over is to fall on someone who does not know the job. Now I know the miroiterie and the carpentry alu: we immediately spoke the same language, we talked about building sites, suppliers, products, achievements, problems of customers and when we speak the same language it sticks immediately "explains t ' she.

Key objective for the coming year: "rehabilitate the production tool". Purchase premises, equip them with tools and set up a team. From the point of view of hiring a journeyman apprentice, aged 16, has just joined the troops a week after taking office Dorothée Leneuf-Blaise who welcomes it because train and transmit the know-how is part of his ambitions.

Recall that the company Rochelaise manufactures and installs aluminum Technal joinery for a client base of 60% private individuals and develops a business trading and cutting single glazing, replacement of breakage, work mirrors (shower screen, credence etc ... ) for the mirroring part. Its new leader aims for two million euros

Fire at the Mirror Factory Strippoli in Isère

About thirty firefighters converged Monday night in Crolles to extinguish a fire that was declared around 21 hours in a glazier-glazing company.

The fire was apparently developed in a room where PVC carpentry equipment was stored, significant smoke emanating from this warehouse located rue des Grives, in the area near the roundabout access to the ramp of the A41.

Firefighters avoided the spread to offices

At the scene, the firefighters established three spears, one on a ladder truck. They cut off the spread on the left wing of this building, occupied in particular by the reception of the company (the company Strippoli), and managed to circumscribe the disaster, located in a room located in the central part of the building, itself with an area of approximately 350 square meters.

Fire soldiers also rescued one of the people in charge of the site, who burned himself with one hand but whose state of health did not require immediate hospitalization.

The operation of total extinction and cuttings continued for part of the night.

Last night we did not know the precise causes of the incident, as well as the possible consequences of this fire in terms of technical unemployment.

Trophy of companies of the Cantal, France in the category "Numérique": Miroiterie Laumond

The winner of this category is Miroiterie Claude Laumond. This company, which employs 35 people, specializes in mirrors and aluminum carpentry and works for individuals, but especially for communities and public markets.

For Michel Gennai, this Trophy rewards "the culmination of a recovery that went well and also a team that helped develop Laumond Miroiterie".

Michel Gennai has been managing the Miroiterie Laumond in Aurillac since autumn 2016. He has just invested in digital machines to increase his production capacity.

From a small family store, opened in the city center of the Cantal prefecture in the 1950s, the Miroiterie Laumond has today become a society with national influence.

Sixty years later, it employs twenty-eight people in its 3.500 m2, boulevard du Vialenc, in Aurillac, and generated a turnover of € 7 million last year.

€ 7 million turnover in 2017

"We also have a second site with seven employees in Figeac, in the Lot," says Michel Gennai, the boss at the helm of this company, active in glazing, verandas, design and construction of facades, and aluminum joinery.

In the last two years, he has pursued the strategy begun by his predecessor, Claude Laumond: to develop the influence of society throughout France. When Michel Gennai took over the company, it then realized 90% of its turnover at the local level. If he continued to work on this historic market of individuals and communities, which brought him nearly 2M € of the 7 M € achieved in 2017, he had to go a little further geographically, "to secure the company ".

Currently, Laumond works on sites in Paris, Ile-de-France, Toulouse, La Baule ... "Today, the trade in aluminum carpentry manufactured in our workshops is in full development. "

All our articles on the Cantal Business Awards

Michel Gennai was able to rely on his professional network, reinforced during his thirty years of experience in the field of carpentry aluminum, and partnerships with other companies.

"A card to play as a tailor-made specialist"

To cope with this development and remain competitive, Laumond Mirror Factory will also digitize its production. This summer, she invested € 200,000 in a digital saw and a digital machining center. This investment is coupled with the implementation of a machining computer module providing a direct link between the Techndesign software and the machines.

"We have the commitment of our main supplier Technal to support us in this process. We are pilots on this project for the integration of this new technology. "

For Michel Gennai, Laumond has a real know-how and competent people. "In our business, there are window manufacturers, small aluminum producers, and we in the middle. We have a map to play as an SME specialized in tailor-made. The use of these new tools will increase the production capacity. And who says growth, says hiring, assures Michel Gennai. "We recruited three people for manufacturing this summer. "

Châteauroux: SMVB, the last glazier of the Indre area, France

Chateauroux. Dominique and Claudie Maisonnier took over the Mirroiterie Glazier du Berry (ex-Montoya) in 2015, and created SMVB Menuiseries last year.

Do not tell Dominique Maisonnier that a broken mirror is seven years of misfortune. The manager of the Mirroiterie Glazier du Berry is not superstitious. In 2015, with his wife, Claudie, this Limougeaud takes over SMVB (1), company located avenue Pierre-de-Coubertin, Châteauroux: "It's continuity because originally, it was the company Gérard et André Montoya which existed for more than fifty years.

"A local company on a human scale" After major renovations and the creation of a showroom, Dominique Maisonnier founded, in September 2017, SMVB Menuiseries, in partnership with the national network La Boutique du Menuisier. "There were four employees at the time of the recovery; today, we will soon be eight and I hope to be able to recruit experienced installer installers and a quantity meter in the future ", announces the manager of the miroiterie castelroussine. A development that follows essential investments: "A straight machine to make polished joints and a double head drill for glass and we plan to invest in cutting tables, about 50,000 € and 130,000 €, soon". At 54, Dominique Maisonnier is the man of the glass and the mirror: "Ten years at Saint-Gobain then in carpentry within the company Huis-Clos. I was also director of a large renewable energy company, bought by Suez, but I wanted a human-sized and local company. " SMVB makes its happiness to become the only miroiterie of the Indre, family and independent business.

For the glass activity, SMVB meets all the demands: laminated, showcases. "This is our main activity. We tailor-made for professionals and also individuals with our largest tray that ranges from 3.50 m to 6 m long and we also assemble aluminum, wood and PVC frames. We work. "

Mirror activity today represents 20% of the SMVB figure with real novelties that appeal to customers, "especially glasses credence, lacquered glass any color that can be used in the decoration of kitchens or bathrooms". SMVB, the reflection of a great success.

With 10.9 million windows, the French market is starting to rise again:

The French window market benefited from an upturn with a market increase of 7% between 2015 and 2017. This market recovery follows a decade of steady decline after the peak of the market observed in 2005-2006 with 12 , 3 million windows. Over the period 2000-2006, the market had increased on average by 4% each year. From 2008 to 2015, the volume of the market then decreased by about 5% for each measure to return in 2015 to the same level as in 2002 around 10 million units (-4% in 2010, -5% in 2012). and -8.3% in 2015).

Information about Besana, Glasstec

The Italian company Besana (CMB) which was for years one of the leaders of double edger  and straight line edgers market was on a small booth without any double edger.Very far from the large booths of the past from Hannibal Besana time.

Some information following visit Glasstec

The number of visitors seemed correct, especially Wednesday, but not at the level of the great years of Glasstec.

Exhibitor Questions It seems that the machine market continues to be difficult. Hall 16, usually completely occupied by Italian factories, was not completely filled and non-Italian stands were quite often seen.

We have seen drastic reductions in the area occupied by certain factories. The most impressive was that of Besana, very far from the great years of Besana. Macotec, the cutting table manufacturer, also reduced the area and no longer occupied a joint stand with Movetro. Even the factories which traditionally occupied impressive surfaces (Intermac, Bottero) had reduced their surface. Denver, which was growing year by year, was also on a smaller surface.

Forvet and Forel were still impressive (as was Lisec, of course, Hall 17).

Neptun continues to grow, still driven by the US market.

Bavelloni, since its acquisition by 4 of its executives continues to progress and returns to the recipes of what had made its success.

CMS presented for the first time a bilateral.

On several stands was presented a manipulator that loaded and unloaded 2 edgers positioned opposite each other.

Technal launches a loyalty program in France

Since the beginning of June, carpenters and small general construction companies have been able to benefit from the new PST + loyalty program! Free and without obligation, it is open to all the holders of a professional customer account within one of the 11 regional agencies POINT SERVICES TECHNAL *. This new service confirms the spirit of proximity established and cultivated every day by the specialist in aluminum joinery TECHNAL. The principle is simple. Each purchase allows the member company to accumulate points exchangeable in TECHNAL benefits (T-shirts, pens, tape-meters, unpackers, color swatches, documentation, training, tools, etc.). The PST + card is valid in all POINT SERVICES TECHNAL establishments. If a professional realizes a building site in the Hauts-de-Seine (92), he will be able to go to the nearest agency, that of Gennevilliers for example, and validate his points even if his registration was recorded in another TECHNICAL SERVICES POINT.

Countersinks for flat glass

After drilling it may happen that the periphery of the hole there are some scratches or that this hole is intended to let a screw to fix the glazing and that it is desired to house the head of the screw inside the glass.

In this case we will mill the glass around the hole, either to remove the scratches (case glass for tempering) or to create a cavity to accommodate the screw head.

The diamond tool used is a countersink. It is a diamond cone, the diamond part making an angle of 45 ° with respect to the axis of the tool.

How to choose the right tool because there are several?

There are several  types, adjustable or not, continuous diamond crown or segmented diamond crown.

Adjustable or not.

In the case of adjustable countersinkss it is a truncated-shaped tool that is mounted directly on the body of the drill and that is blocked by a screw at the desired height. Each countersink of this type can only be used with one drill diameter.

This type of tool is used when all holes for a certain drilling diameter must be milled, the drilling and milling operation being done without changing tools on the drill. For this type of tool it is important to check with your supplier that the rotation speed of your drill is the same as for milling.

In the case of non-adjustable countersinks it is a diamond cone (or in some cases also a truncated cone). Choosing the right tool is based on the range of hole diameters for which you want to use it. Watering is done in this case as for a classic core drill, by the inside and outside of the diamond tool.

Diamond crown continues or not?

The parameter to take into account in this case is the depth of the milling. A continuous diamond countersink is capable of removing up to 2 mm of glass. A countersink  with a segmented crown can remove up to 5 mm of glass.

Possibility also in this case to have adjustable countersink or not.

From bank to glazing

Article by Jean Marc Corset, Signed Lausanne

Eva Nagy speaks of "chance". But all the same: going from the banking profession to the glazier is not commonplace. Of course, there is this family business that did not interest his brothers. She did not mind to make her professional career, especially since it is defined as a "manual". When one visits his workshop-deposit located just below the forest of Sauvabelin, near Lausanne, one understands better its choice. Because his work is more than the work of the independent craftsman as the entrepreneur focused on management. A way of doing that seems to fit well with his personality.

E. Nagy Sàrl, general glazing and mirrors, is certainly only three years old in this legal form. But she has been doing this business in Switzerland for thirty-eight years. Eva Nagy was apprenticed to SBS - the three-key bank that merged with UBS - as a business management employee. But she quickly changes direction when the small business of her parents grows and lacks arms. She will then make a glazier's CFC.

discrimination

Novice in the business, the young woman discovers an environment that is not soft with women, especially during construction appointments. "Male colleagues were very discriminating, some wanted to put the woman back home." She assumes his feminist side, believing that these attacks are due to advances in equality that are poorly experienced by some. Now that she "has experience and is taken seriously," she says she has no trouble.

She does not say as much about the vocational training of apprentices glaziers, which she knows well, and where she has recommenced the teaching of technical branches as an expert in glassmaking techniques. Despite her experience, the 59-year-old CEO now feels this generational conflict as a real socio-cultural gap. Like many teachers and parents of teenagers, she sees how easy it is to understand the reasons for this intergenerational phenomenon and apply the right recipes.

That's why, at Pavement 79, she is not uncomfortable managing her box independently, relying on only one employee. No doubt a second soon. In her office, she records the orders, delegates a part of them and takes care herself of many works. Custom pieces most of the time, because the house E. Nagy is now mainly replacing glass.

Rapid interventions

In his father's time, the company counted up to ten employees. But with the crisis of the 1990s in building and construction, we had to make choices. "I told him it did not interest me to work big. I wanted to continue to make glass replacement locally. Since we had a loyal clientele, we did not feel the crisis. "The company has thus gradually reduced its size to what it is today, focusing on its niche business. Its strength: be very reactive to the needs of customers, individuals and managers, and be able to intervene very quickly.

Conversely, and necessarily according to her choice, she has not benefited from the real estate boom in recent years. But she does not complain. She wants to keep time for her hobbies: today sewing and pottery, formerly sculpture and painting, as evidenced by a part of the workshop where once were also framed paintings. Henceforth, for her, came the time for reflection on her succession. Without children, she thinks about ceasing her activity or handing over the business. And why not, possibly, accompany a buyer?

Meeting at the barracks

It is true that Nagy is also the story of his parents, over 80 years old and still alive. That of two Hungarian refugees who fled their country after the Budapest uprising against the communist regime and the Soviet tutelage. Bertalan, the glazier who came from the capital, met his future wife, Anna, from a region close to the Austrian border, at the barracks of La Pontaise.

In 1964, the year of the National Expo, the glazier starts his own business and both create their business at Avenue du Mont-Blanc, near the Comptoir. In 1979, they bought the pavement road building and its depot, which allowed them to have a few specialized machines and a nice stock of glasses of all kinds, big and small, and mirrors. We see many with reliefs or prints, and vintage colors that remind us of the windows of old farms or the decorations of villas of the 1960s.

Foot OM Sud Miroiterie

Last weekend, at the Robert Louis-Dreyfus training center, the traditional partner tournament took place.

This event, which has become one of the annual events for the club's partners, brought together nearly 150 players forming 14 teams, to end this beautiful season in a competitive atmosphere but very friendly.

At the end of the highly contested group stages, teams trained by Vranken, Adidas, a Centrapro - Tridec Menuiserie - Sud Miroiterie alliance and a team made up of OM employees qualified for the semi-finals.

Teams Vranken and Adidas, from the same group played in a final full of twists. Indeed, the Adidas team that was led to score throughout the game managed to win on the score of 6 to 4.

Congratulations to the big winners of this day, who for their last participation wins the 2018 partners tournament but also to all the participants for the motivation and the state of mind

Note the presence of Futbak, start'up finalist of the OM Innovation Cup 2017, which offered participants throughout the day to get their stats live. This innovative concept allows players to access their performance, the time of a match, through a real-time data analysis.

We once again thank the teams of partners such as Adidas, Sonepar, Onet, Orange, Caisse d'Epargne Provence Alpes Corse, the County Council, Hyundai, Roche Bobois, Sun in Provence, Centrapro, Tridec Carpentry, South Mirror, Vranken, Mediaco or else Etic for their participation

Olympique de Marseille also thanks all the participants, who offered a beautiful show in joy and good humor.

Good vintage for the sale of windows in France

More than 10 million windows were sold in 2017, after 4 difficult years. The decrease in the amount of the Cite and its end at the end of June may be for something. According to the UFME federation, sales rose 6% in 2017.

This level is similar to that of 2011-2012. But still far from the record of 2008 to 12.5 million windows.

Concern, however, points to whether the windows will be eligible for the energy check. Ademe and CSTB must make public a report on the 25% energy saving claimed by the profession.

The 10 million windows are 60% for PVC, 30% for aluminum and 10% for wood. And almost 70% come from the renovation market.

Flat glass and aluminium and PVC joiner. March 2018

Closing Voir tous les Miroirs à Tours.

Voir tous les miroirs, the oldest pas-de-porte of the rue du Commerce, whose workshop is in Joué, closed after sixty years of presence.

In 1958, Abel and Ginette Bertrand, miroitiers artisans, who previously had a manufacturing company in Paris, open Venice in Touraine, rue du Commerce, Tours. "Sixty years ago, it was the era of the engraved Venice mirror. The shop was in Tours and the workshop in Joué-les-Tours. There were up to three people who worked there. With a rare specificity: that of moneyer, for antiques. There are only ten in France. This consists in depositing a thin layer of metallic silver on the glass, "explains Brigitte Hervouet, who in 1985 joined her mother-in-law in the shop, while her companion, Eric Bertrand, was at the workshop.

The new generation then changed the name of the business to Voir, all the mirrors and extended the range of glass to decorative objects and, a little later, in 2000, jewelry, including those in Murano glass (near Venice), more than fifty creators.

While pursuing his small projects at home, from building halls to bathrooms, through the kitchen, "where glass is currently very fashionable".

"There are more than industrial mirrors" Because little by little "globalization has completely changed the market. Before, there were high-end products that were passed on from generation to generation. Today is different. A page is turned, there are more than industrial mirrors.

As a result, the only artisanal mirrors in the region have no buyers. "We sold to a small independent niche business. "We are very well known in the region. Our faithful clientele was moved by the definitive closure when we started the liquidation, before the holidays

I like my street, there are many independent businesses, it is an active street.

Technis release on Evasafe ... .and the future

As you know 2018 is a year of transition and changes in our infill film offering, here are some of the official information we want to share with you. The calendar is the one we described in our previous press releases released in 2017:

BRIDGESTONE halts the production of several products, including EVASAFE (Glass) and EVASKY (Photovoltaic).

The name of BRIDGESTONE and the brands EVASAFE and EVASKY will be completely removed from the markets from 2019.

BRIDGESTONE's European headquarters, BRIDGESTONE industrial Ltd, based in Germany, at 89 Berliner Ring in Bensheim, remains operational and functional until the end of 2018.

Large quantities of EVASAFE films are available in our inventory, they will cover the production needs for a large part of the year 2018, at least until the GLASSTEC exhibition, which will be held from 23 to 26 October 2018, period to from which EVASAFE will be "officially and definitively" replaced by our continuation and development products, which we will be offering from April 2018, and present to you now.

A new network called GLAAST, takes the place of BRIDGESTONE, and continues the manufacture and distribution of Japanese thermosetting interlayer films, in the pure tradition of the EVASAFE, that is to say unique, quality products, rigid, hydrophobic, offering high performance ... usable for all applications.

GLAAST is based in Germany, at the same address as BRIDGESTONE. Several people from the former network, including former BRIDGESTONE engineers and chemists, are part of GLAAST.

The production is still done in Japan, under the GLAAST brand, in the factories of a major industrial partner, which has about 30 years of experience in the production of calendered interlayer films.

TECHNIS remains a member of the new GLAAST network, as exclusive distributor, unlike a number of former BRIDGESTONE distributors, who have been excluded from the project.

The interlocutors, in Germany as in France, remain the same, we have a real organizational continuation.

As for the movies, we also have a real continuation, and that's the point.

We are going from April 2018 to start marketing the products that will take over from EVASAFE, so it's about SECURE and DAYLIGHT movies.

- The SECURE film, is the continuation film, which directly takes over from the clear EVASAFE.

This is a real "copy-pasted" product and its performance.

Indeed, it is a unique thermosetting film, without plasticizer, made in Japan, very rigid, moisture-proof, UV protective ... always perfectly suitable for applications such as railings, floor slabs, canopies, roofs ...

The filiation between the EVASAFE and the SECURE is obvious, all the reports and the technical validities prove it, each manufacturer can verify it.

- The film DAYLIGHT, is the film that will succeed the extra light EVASAFE.

This is a development product, a bit different from BRIDGESTONE's extra clear film in terms of performance and capacity, which makes it possible to offer a more complete product: more elastic, less rigid, and therefore more versatile.

Its rigidity remains high enough and stable to be used in the manufacture of railings for example.

In addition to the two Japanese films, SECURE and DAYLIGHT, we are expanding our range of EVA films, with a third product, a thermoplastic EVA, the B-FLEXIBLE film launched at the last VITRUM show. This film is less efficient and less technical than our Japanese films, but offers a serious and complementary alternative, with a lower price.

So today we have an EVA offer more complete than before, with:

- a rigid EVASAFE / SECURE film such as we have always had,

- a very versatile film DAYLIGHT which is very qualitative and innovative,

- and a complementary "basic" thermoplastic film, the B-FLEXIBLE EVA.

The French national union SNFPSA becomes the Actibaie professional group

Yannick Michon, union president announced for the National Union of Closure, Sun Protection and Associated Professions, a strategic repositioning ... and a name change!

This decision is explained in his view by the difficulty to communicate on a name and acronym as long.

The new name of what is now called a "professional group" rather than a union has been revealed: it is "Actibaie": simpler and more meaningful for everyone, including the young employees that companies in the Doors, Doors, Shutters and Blinds sector are seeking to attract.

Questioning and repositioning

2150 members (including 100 manufacturers spread throughout the country), 29,000 employees and a turnover of 2.8 billion euros on a market of closure and solar protection which is 3,4 billion euros: Actibaie represents 80% of the industrial products put on the market and displays a solid financial and structural health. But since 2016, the group had the feeling of being too little known with regard to the actions and services offered. Moreover, far from considering the return of growth as a long-term gain, the union wanted to think in depth about the new issues of the market. With significant concern for many years, the ability of the sector to cope with recruitment difficulties forcing manufacturers to become selective with their customers and limit their order book. "Sales people, construction managers, maintenance technicians are becoming difficult to recruit," laments Yannick Michon. The president also notes the need to engage a work with the National Education to make known the trades of the sector which would win very often to be for the sector and for the employment in France.

New name, new era

Because in its new communication strategy, Actibaie intends to address all its members, its future members but also the young people who will integrate tomorrow, network companies. Educational tools, popularization of standards and DTUs (sleeping pills for many): the action of the group consists in putting in place tools that draw quality upwards by making available knowledge and training to all its members, whatever their profile. One could perceive in the calm and determined announcement of this strategic upheaval, a massive awareness and a willingness to act in front of (but also with) the changes to the work in the sector and in the building in general. Whether in terms of resources, training, innovation or e-communication, taking into account the environment of members (prescribers, lawmakers, press, media ...) The energy transition is obvious and frame. Strategic thinking was initiated in 2016, prompting an in-depth questioning that finally came to an end after a year and a half of work, at this change of name, from the era of acronyms to that of meaningful and immediate, coherent semantics. with that of social networks. Voted unanimously without abstention at the end of the general meeting, this change of name is therefore endorsed: Actibaie's communication plan starts today and will continue for several months.

New identity, new website and a free mobile app for its members

To ensure its mission to inform, support, train its members and promote the trades of the sector, the change takes place according to a global strategy not only identity but also tools focused on the web and social networks. Actibaie acquires a new graphic charter, a new website and a free mobile application for its members. The group will also continue to develop its educational tools and its policy of promoting the sector. We will come back in detail in issue 104 of Verre & Protections on the activity report of the group and its strategic repositioning with an exclusive interview with Yannick Michon, president of Actibaie.

Miroiterie de Champagne, France, in liquidation

The commercial court of Troyes placed, on March 13, the Miroiterie of Champagne in liquidation judicial. The company specialized in glass products, manufacturing, installation, maintenance of wood joinery, PVC, metal, aluminum and steel (verandas, greenhouses, French windows, etc.) existed since 1987. It seems that it had turnover difficulties in a particularly competitive sector. Its financial situation being tense for 2 or 3 years and its liquidity not being sufficient to ensure the exploitation, according to the expectations of the judgment rendered by the court of commerce of Troyes, pushed the co-managers of the company to request the judicial liquidation with authorization of continuation of activity until the end of March, in order to finish the building sites. The company employs 18 people. No buyer has come forward.

Cerium oxide

Cerium is the least rare rare earths, especially in its case are not so much, especially when its name comes from Ceres, goddess of the earth, cerium has many applications, always growing, as for meet Ceres who is also the goddess of growth!

Cerium, the chemical element of Ce and atomic number 58, is a silver-gray metal that belongs to the rare earth group. Its crystalline structure is cubic faces centered, its atomic mass is M = 140.1. It was identified in 1803 by two chemists Martin Heinrich. Klaproth and Jöns Jakob Berzélius, and in a state of proper purity by Carl Gustaf Mosander about twenty years later.

Cerium, which is the most abundant lanthanide (about 48 ppm, is more abundant than copper and 4 times more than silver) in the Earth's crust, is part of the whole rare earth (TR) which does not are not that rare, but often their oxides are the by-products of mining an ore. The main mineral sources of cerium are monazite, rare earth and thorium phosphate, which is the main ore of thorium, bastnæsite, rare earth fluorocarbonate, which is often found as a by-product during extraction iron ore |

World production of rare earth oxides is in the order of 140,000 tons / year, 95% of which in China, which has drastically reduced its exports since 2009 in order to keep the virtual monopoly of a strategic material that is considered strategic by their government.

To obtain cerium oxide two methods are used:

• not separated (Molycorp): enriched bastnæsite is oxidized by calcination in air at 650 ° C. The trivalent rare earths (all except Ce (IV)) are then dissolved with hydrochloric acid (see hydrochloric acid). The residue, after calcination, contains about 70% of ceria or cerium oxide, CeO 2, used directly;

• separated (Rhodia): the monazite is attacked by soda concentrated at 180 ° C. The Na3PO4 phosphate formed is removed by washing and the rare earth hydroxides are, after filtration, then solubilized by nitric acid. By means of a battery of liquid-liquid extractions, the thorium nitrate is first separated, then always by solvent extraction batteries, the lanthanum is extracted, then the cerium and the other TRs. Nearly 1,500 stages of mixer-settlers are used to separate rare earths.

The first use of cerium dates from the end of the 19th century when city gas lighting was generalized. Austrian chemist Carl Auer von Welsbach developed the "sleeve" of cotton dipped in a mixture of thorium and cerium nitrates and dried.

During the first heating, the cotton burns and remains the grid of ThO2-CeO2 oxides which are luminescent and give in the flame a greenish white light. This process is still used for camping lighting (gas!).

Other uses are numerous. The lighter stones are in ferrocerium, in fact a 25-30% iron alloy and 70% mischmetal (mischmetal is a mixture of ceric earths, 50% of cerium, 25% of lanthanum, 17% of neodymium and other rare earths 'light non separated'). As rare earths are highly oxidizable, the fine particles torn off by abrasion are pyrophoric, they ignite in the air and ignite the flame of the gas.

This use remains relevant given its low cost despite the competition of piezoelectric.

One use that consumes a large tonnage of cerium oxide CeO2 is the precision polishing in aqueous suspension. It has replaced iron oxide and is used as a finishing abrasive for spectacle lenses, television tubes, LCD screens and silicon wafers (see Silicon). Nearly 24,000 tons are devoted each year to this sector. To decolorize the glass by oxidizing the impurities of iron oxide and as anti-browning in glasses exposed to ionizing radiation (cathode ray tubes, UV sterilization) is used cerium (IV) 1 or 2% in the glass composition.

Some manufacturers, such as Rhodia, may have to favor the catalysis sector to the detriment of the glass sector in the future.

But many projects outside China are under study

Miroiterie David. France. Confirmation of unfair dismissal

Their dismissal in 2012 was abusive: in Caen, nineteen former employees will share the damages, as confirmed by the Court of Appeal, January 19, 2018.

Gathered, this Tuesday evening, at the House of the unions, the former employees of the miroiterie David, company created in Caen in 1928, have the smile. "A decision of the social chamber of the Court of Appeal, it is important," confirms their lawyer, Sophie Lecellier. That of 19 January 2018 is clearly favorable to them: their dismissal in 2012 was recognized "without real or serious cause"

This decision confirms that of 2015, rendered at first instance by the industrial tribunal of Caen, which had already concluded unfair dismissals. Whose fault is it ? To their buyer, AGC France, representing the Japanese group Asahi Glass Co, world leader in glass.

In April 2012, its managers announced the closure of the plant, a veritable jewel of local industrial heritage, which employed up to 120 employees. In the last days, they were only 47. "AGC France, at the time of the recovery, had made promises of investments, says Me Lecellier. They were extremely limited. The employees saw, above all, machines and orders go to other production sites. "

Cekal clarifies the benefits of certified glass

On the occasion of the Building World Fair, the Cekal glazing certification body organized its biennial conference on the theme "Glass and urban planning: safety, quality of life and certified glazing". To address these themes, five experts were invited. The objective: to highlight the strengths and performance of tempered and laminated glazing, promote their use and promote Cekal branding.

A good glazing is not only synonymous with transparency, thermal and acoustic insulation or summer comfort. It is also a guarantee of a better quality of life. It is to recall the advantages of the glazing that he certifies that Cekal organized, on Batimat, his biennial conference. The chosen theme? "Glass and town planning: safety, quality of life and certified glazing".

During a round table, five experts took turns to bring their lighting and their cross testimonials on the topics of urban quality, regulation and certification. It was also to present exemplary achievements and to return to the use of Cekal certified glazings.

Glass, a guarantee of security

Sylvie Laroche, researcher at the Center for Research on Sound Space and Urban Environment (Cresson) reminded the importance of approaching the inhabited space "in terms of nuisance, function, comfort, landscape and atmosphere by combined logic of aesthetics, use and sensation ".

"The glass, through its play of transparency and light, its thermal performance, acoustic and safety naturally generates a feeling of comfort and well-being in inhabited spaces. The material also allows to fully enjoy the building, the space and the environment, "she said.

Marc Warnery, managing director and associate architect of Reichen and Robert & Associés, referred to urban redevelopment operations aimed at reintroducing urban "warmth, nature and humanity". Taking the example of the achievements of his agency, he said: "The coexistence of several functions within the same space, the search for spatial fluidity, the relation to the context, the logics of construction, the ethics of the architecture, are the recurring themes of their work which gives pride of place to the glass material ".

The notions of "light" and "transparency" then punctuated the speech of Fabienne Couvert, architect and director of architecture and urban planning (Arep group). "Light and glass material have always been a combination in the imagination of train stations. This is why the recent creations give pride of place to the material, capable of offering, through plays of light and transparency, a feeling of comfort, aesthetics and security conducive to the fluidity of the movements and to register in the environment and heritage ".

A changing material

Pierre Martin, national specialist "Light facades - Glassworks - Exterior joinery, APAVE" has brought his expertise in the regulations that defines the types of glazing used by type of work, its location and types of risks. He recalled that DTU 39 "Glazing and mirrors" is the main text to which "it should be referred". The text benefited in 2017 from a simplification and an adapted taking into account of the seismic risks. "The control of technical risks has, among other things, the objective of ensuring the safety of users by safety glazing, in the event of an earthquake, when using the structures, with regard to the risk of falling into the earth. empty, of falling dangerous elements, of injury in case of collisions or in case of fire, "he said.

The conference of course relied on the participation of a Cekal representative. Referring first to the security aspects, Jérôme Carrié, Secretary General of the certifying body, recalled that for the safety of people, "there are 2 classes 2B2 (clashes) and 1B1 (clashes and falls)". For the safety of goods, "we distinguish classes P1A to P5A (vandalism resistance), and classes P6B and P7B (burglar resistance). "

He also returned to the performance of glazing. Tempered glazing provides "increased resistance to mechanical and thermal stress and less risk of injury by fine fragmentation of the material into a multitude of small pieces, ensuring a lower risk of injury in case of breakage".

The laminated glass, consisting of two or more glasses assembled together with one or more spacers, can break, he said, but most of the time splinters remain glued to the interlayer, this which provides "protection of persons and property".

Concerning the Cekal marking, it concerns the quality of glazing: assembly, durability, performance.  It is awarded on the basis of audits and tests for a period of 6 months.

"For tempered glazing, compliance criteria relate to the quality of thermal quenching: fragmentation and surface stresses. For laminated glazing, the conformity criteria relate to the state of the peripheral zone after accelerated aging ", finally reminded the certifying body.

Guardian Glass to supply the Jeddah Tower façade glass

Soon-to-be tallest building in the world.

Developers of Jeddah Tower – what will be the world’s tallest building – have selected Guardian Glass to supply the façade glass for the project’s over one-kilometer-high landscape.

Guardian Glass is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of float and highperformance energy-efficient coated glass products.

Jeddah Tower (also known as Kingdom Tower) is an unprecedented project that dares to go beyond the one-kilometer threshold.

The over $1.2billion USD (£800million) supertall building structure, to be completed in 2019, will cover an area of 5.3 million square meters and include 439 apartments, 200 hotel rooms, 59 elevators and 2,205 parking spaces.

It is set to break new world records for tallest building, highest occupied floor, highest architectural top, highest tip and highest sky terrace.

Guardian Glass will provide more than 400,000 square meters, the area of approximately 55 football fields, of aesthetic and functional glass panels that meet the iconic landmark’s complex energy and performance requirements.

The glass chosen for the massive structure is a custom-made, double-pane glass system combining Guardian Glass’ popular SunGuard® Silver 20 and SunGuard® Neutral 60 coated glass products. The robust technology is made to withstand a 2.5-meter radius sway without breakage or leakage.

Guardian Glass Middle East & Africa General Manager Mohammad Al Ibrahim said, “The unprecedented size and height of the Jeddah Tower required us to carefully work with the business team to select a glass system that offers a balance between energy savings and light transmission. For that reason, we have combined two of our most popular and reliable Guardian SunGuard products that we are confident will offer the best performance without compromising aesthetics.”

As a high-performance, solar-reflective coated glass, the exterior SunGuard® Silver 20 pane will help block daytime heat yet allow for abundant natural light and provide a luxurious silver-green aesthetic. The interior pane, with SunGuard® Neutral 60, will help protect against indirect nighttime heat.

The skyscraper’s unique, circular, glass-floored sky terrace, located more than 610 meters (2,000 feet) above ground level, will also be supplied by Guardian Glass. Once completed, the new world’s highest sky terrace will overlook the Red Sea.

Jeddah Tower Project Director John Zerafa of United Arab Aluminium Co. (UACC) said, “Guardian Glass was specified by Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill Architects. I have worked on the Burj Khalifa, and the Guardian Glass team was there every step of the way, from glass manufacturing to technical support. Guardian Glass provides more value in comparison to other glass suppliers.”

“Our commitment to a project extends well beyond the production and supply of glass through processing, fabrication and cladding until the project is complete,” added Merritt Gaunt, Vice President, Middle East and Asia, Guardian Glass. “We are pleased to be the supplier of choice for this landmark project.”

The glass will be manufactured at the Al Jubail Guardian plant, then delivered to UAAC factory in Jeddah, where the glass will be processed into double glazed units, structurally glazed to the frame with high-performance secondary structural sealant applied. The fully assembled curtain wall system will then be delivered to site for installation.

Guardian’s trained and certified Technical Advisory Center (TAC) team of experts will be available to provide around-the-clock support on the project to optimize results. An onsite team will work closely with UAAC to provide consistent supervision, maintenance and long-term post-project service.

Jeddah Tower will be an exciting addition to Guardian Glass’ extensive portfolio of iconic landmarks and developments in hospitality, retail, residential, corporate and institutional properties in the Middle East and around the world.

Barbet-Brefort moves to Blois, France

Specialized in glazing, mirrors, the company Barbet-Brefort has just moved into new premises. She has invested in a showroom to showcase her know-how.

If there are houses whose know-how is well established, this is the case of Barbet-Brefort. Indeed, the longevity of the company speaks for it. "The Barbet company was created in 1936. We took it back with my partner, Michel Breton, in 2004, adding at the same time the name of Brefort afterwards," explains Bruno Fortin. Keeping the name Barbet well known in the region and adding the beginning of the name of each of the two buyers to bring a little novelty.

But, despite her respectable age, old lady Barbet does not rest on these achievements and continues its modernization. Taking advantage of a classification of the production site of Barbet in flood zone, the two partners were forced to move. On November 15th, they left their site of Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt to join Blois Vienne. "We found 1,500 m² on the ZA des Petites Métairies. Our premises are three times larger to optimize our production tool and to welcome our customers in better conditions, "reveals the co-manager. And thanks to an exhibition hall of several hundred square meters, the company can now expose its know-how to its customers. It must be said that the areas of intervention of Barbet-Brefort are many: glazing, mirrors, verandas, awnings, blinds ....

New AGC float line in Cuneo

On November 3rd, 2017, AGC Flat Glass Italia officially inaugurated its new float line in Cuneo.

After a cold repair process of three months and an investment of around 25 million euros, the new float presents high-end technologies that will enhance the plant's productivity and its environmental impact in addition to improving the performance of the existing product ranges produced in Cuneo.

The opening ceremony was attended by the AGC Group President and CEO, Takuya Shimamura, the Regional President - Building & Industrial Glass Europe, Philippe Bastien, representatives of the local authorities and the press.

A modernised and “greener” plant

During the summer, renovation work was carried out on the Cuneo plant using the most innovative design techniques. The upgraded float line will significantly increase the plant capacity, reducing energy consumption by 25%, with a corresponding positive impact on its performance and product quality.

Lower energy consumption also means a remarkable reduction in atmospheric emissions, with 50% less CO (carbon monoxide), 14% less CO2 (carbon dioxide) and 30% less NOx (nitrogen oxides).

Improved product ranges

The Cuneo site manufactures a wide range of products in various thicknesses, from 3 to 25 millimetres. Besides clear float, the site now also produces the renewed Planibel Linea Azzurra range, a float glass made solely in this plant. Available in thicknesses from 8 to 25 mm, this special glass has a slightly bluish tint.

It is made from nickel-free materials without any inclusions, yielding a unique product that is easy to cut and process. It is therefore particularly suitable for large glazed surfaces and the most refined furniture creations.

In addition to these float products, the plant manufactures SMART solar control glazings as well as Planibel Clearsight, AGC’s anti-reflective glass, thanks to its four high-tech processing lines.

Restored competitiveness

“AGC Flat Glass Italia and its Cuneo plant are one of the outstanding features of the Group that I have the honour to lead. I am glad to be here today to celebrate this important goal achieved by the Italian management. This operation will increase our competitiveness on the market. Such a development will allow us to reach two aims: supporting our leadership with high-performance products and contributing to a sustainable future," says Takuya Shimamura, AGC Group's President and CEO.

“Increased capacity, extended range of products, greater energy efficiency and better environmental performance turn this refurbishment into a rebirth for Cuneo’s furnace.

For the whole plant, that importantly means restored competitiveness on the way to long term sustainability,” adds Philippe Bastien, Regional President - Building & Industrial Glass Europe.
