Fusion of branches in glass

Collective agreement on the merger of professional branches

After a year of negotiations, the employees 'and employers' representatives of the branches of the Stained Glass, Glass Tube, Glass Tube and the Union of Glass Crafts have sealed the merger of their conventional texts by signing an agreement.

The CFE-CFDT, the CGT, the CGT-FO, the CFE-CGC and the UNSA have unanimously signed a merger / absorption agreement between trade unions and employers, which creates a new conventional field for " Crystal, Glass and Stained Glass ".

This regrouping is made possible by the annexation of the collective agreements of the Union of the Trade Unions of the Glass Crafts (IDCC 2306), the Industrial Transformation of the Glass Tube (IDCC 161) and the Stained Glass Industry IDCC 1945) to the Collective Agreement for Handmade, Semi-Automatic and Mixed Glass Manufacturing (IDCC 1821).

These annexes will remain in force until 1 January 2022, the date on which all the employees covered by these texts will benefit from the guarantees of the collective agreement IDCC 1821.

The new collective agreement represents approximately 10,000 employees. The representative professional organization in this field is the Fédération des Cristalleries, handmade and mixed glassworks.

Rolltech launches WinUw Calculator: a new app to calculate IG thermal transmittance

Calculating the U value of an IG unit has been made easier and faster. Rolltech makes it easier to design and develop more performing IG for more energy efficient buildings that comply with the strictest international standards. The WinUw calculator is a new app developed by the Glass Alliance company, and is available from App Store for Apple devices and from Google Play Store for Android devices.

This software is very useful in calculating the thermal transmittance of IG starting with the different spacers used. The app can be used with all spacers produced by the Glass Alliance international network ofFenziAlu-Pro and Rolltech, worldwide distributors of materials for very high performance IG units.

The WinUw application is very user-friendly; some parameters are entered to obtain the PSI value of all standard units made with all Glass Alliance spacers. Parameters that can be combined and entered online in the calculator are:
– Four different types of windows based on the material used (PVC, wood, aluminum, aluminum and glass);
– Six types of Glass Alliance Warm Edge spacers from the Multitech, Butylver TPS, CHROMATECH Ultra and CHROMATECH product groups
– Two Standard spacers FERROTECH (galvanized steel spacer) and aluminum spacers are included with calculated values
– Double or triple glazing option in numerous different thicknesses.

For each combination the internal glass edge temperature will also be provided. The WinUw calculator uses EN 10077 standard with equivalent thermal transmittance being determined in accordance with the ift WA-08/3 and WA-17-1 guidelines.

The application is free, available in 6 languages (English, German, French, Russian, Italian and Polish) and in addition to being available for all mobile devices it can also be used directly from a PC at: www.winuw.de/rolltech.

“We have surely developed an innovative app, a useful tool that will definitely be appreciated by our customers – confirmed Johnny Holm, Sales Director at Rolltech – And we are also convinced that this can be another reason to choose Glass Alliance as the main partner for the glass industry”.

Structural glass engineering

Architects of prestigious buildings – whether in culture, politics or business – have always used glass as a design element. Yet today’s functional buildings tend to have shapes that go much further than pure expediency, and glass is therefore used more and more frequently as a structural support element. Historic, 19th-century examples include the greenhouses at Kew Gardens in London and at Laeken in Brussels: glass engineering of the highest standard and indeed over 130 years old. At the time flat glass was still rather a costly building material. The open greenhouses gave people an idea of state-of-the-art 19th-century engineering and of the owners’ wealth.

But the examples also show that glass helps to integrate a building skilfully into the surrounding landscape without disturbing its visual impact. Glass enlarges premises and provides a connection between the inside and the outside.

Glass has symbolic power

Inspired by this type of glass architecture, the renowned architect Frank Gehry recently designed an exhibition building for the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris which was opened in 2014 and shows how contemporary glass engineering can be realised at the highest level. Set within plenty of green space on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, the twelve-part roof structure reminds us of two overlapping sails. Being a self-confessed sailing enthusiast, Gehry wanted to create the impression of a sailing boat moving ahead at full speed.

The total area occupied by glass – 13,300 square metres in all – consists of 3,600 panes, none of which are identical. The angle of the bend is different for each pane, ranging from flat to a 3-metre radius.

Moreover, the building material had to meet all the relevant safety engineering requirements, stipulated under French law. Gehry therefore decided to use laminated safety glass (LSG) in combination with a strong, highly rigid interlayer, 1.52 mm thick and made of SentryGlas® ionoplast from Kuraray Europe GmbH. The actual glass is prestressed, with panes that are six and eight millimetres in thickness. To meet the high standards of structural engineering, the LSG had to be freely shaped, using modified bending furnaces.

The 6-mm inner pane was given a reflective coat, with white ceramic screenprinting and 50% opacity – an important feature to protect the valuable exhibits from direct sunlight. Moreover, it creates a pleasant, non-glare lighting effect.

To ensure an undisturbed overall visual impact of the individual sails, the design engineers and the architect opted for an adhesive bond between the LSG and the frame and also as a filler for the wide expansion joints. They decided to use sealants from Dow Corning…

The float is planned for an annual production of 20 million square meters for the building and automotive markets.

After 4 difficult years following the collapse of the automotive glass and glass markets for the building during which Saint Gobain took exceptional measures to preserve the workstations, the commissioning of this new float, the estimated life of which At 20 years confirms the industrial implication of St Gobain in this region which remains one of its cradles.

Saint Gobain's know-how has helped to increase the productivity of this facility by 10%, reduce energy consumption by 25% and CO2 emissions by 20%.

Color defects inspection with Isra Vision

Reliably identifying all coating defects Color homogeneity control using full-area inline inspection in float glass production Coating defects such as color inconsistencies can considerably reduce the quality of products, so reliable identification of such defects is of utmost importance. The fully-automatic FLOATSCAN Color system inspects the coating quality directly in the production line and detects all serial defects at an early stage – before they become relevant and lead to defective material being processed further. Defects such as color inconsistencies can occur during the pyrolytic coating of glass ribbons in the line. In order to prevent defective material being processed such coating defects need to be taken into account when the panes are cut. In many cases, such defects are caused by errors in the coating process. To meet these challenges, ISRA offers fully-automated solutions that ensure full-area inspection for color defects. FLOATSCAN Color reliably detects all defects such as colored zebra striping, color lines and spots on the entire glass pane. It can both be used as a standalone system and integrated with the all-in-one FLOATSCAN 5D solution. Color inspection is implemented by means of a color camera and ISRA’s Frame Grabber solution, which has proven successful in many applications. Color defects are automatically identified at a very early production stage, avoiding the need for manual inspection processes.

enables users to control and optimize the process in real time and to take appropriate countermeasures in due time in the case of serial defects. Maintenance activities of the coating line can be planned better and the quality data obtained can be used to optimize production processes in a targeted manner. Quality data on the coating is used to accurately determine the quality of the goods produced, to ensure that products fully meet the customers’ expectations and to eliminate the risk of complaints.

Glass. Transparency and reflection

Where would our civilization without glass? What would we be if man had not invented this material and its applications, windows, mirrors, containers, lentils .... ? What is the importance of glass in our progress?

The glass appears to be an essential material of our civilization, especially if one adds his contributions in the field of art (stained glass, mosaic ....).

Serge Bramby analysis in this book, civilization by civilization that brought this material as the technical side as artistic or scientific.

RBM STORY

RBM. (Reynaud Baldichieri Mole) ITALIA was founded in 1963. In the beginning it was a local little workshop: Romano Reynaud worked in a glazing factory and during his spare time he worked out the formula of the first polishing wheel for glass. In 1965 R.B.M. begins to co-operate with important machine manufacturers such as ADA and COVESA: machines are tested and exported with mr. Reynaud's wheels and are more and more well-known both in Italy and abroad. The first polishing wheels to be invented and sold are 9R and 10S, that are still requested a lot today. In the beginning of the eighties, a bigger range of wheels are needed because of new types of machines and more types of glass processings. In this period the first cerium wheel, X081, is made. In the beginning of the nineties, R.B.M manufactures the first resin and polyurethane wheels for the arris. It starts to develop the business relationship with the Chinese market that today covers a 40% of the total export of the company. In 1995 X3000 and X5000 appear in the market as high quality wheels that can reach top polishing results. In 2008 R.B.M. moves on, concentrating not only on flat glass, but also on low-E glass and develops new wheels for the removal of the low E film.In 2009 the range of cerium wheels grows with the new X09, an high resistant wheel for fast rotation speed (3400 RPM).

R.B.M. ITALIA is now a leader in the manufacturing of polishing wheels for flat edge.Beside the manufacturing and sales of polishing wheels, R.B.M. was capable of increasing year after year the demand from local and foreign markets through the development of new products, the presence in the most important exhibitions and the technical assistance for every problem solving of the customers. A new larger factory was built in order to fulfil an higher request of wheels. The originality of the products is guaranteed by an official registration of the trademark all over the world.  Despite of the evolution, R.B.M. has never changed its initial characteristics: a family run business that gives particular care to the production process and the customer satisfaction.

UROBOROS FINDS A NEW HOME IN THE NEW YEAR

Just prior to the close of this year of discontent in our treasured art glass industry, I am delighted to announce that a sale of Uroboros Glass’ name, equipment, technology and formulas has been completed, and that the future of its many iconic products is now secured.  All current Uroboros colors and product lines, from System 96 sheet and frit, and FX90 fusible products, to the traditional Art Glass multi-colored mottles, textures and contracted custom produced glass products are expected to be available again in the months ahead.

The new owner is the experienced colored glass tile manufacturer Oceanside Glasstile (OGT), headquartered in Carlsbad, California.  With 25 years of experience in decorative glass tile design and manufacturing, the OGT owners and crew have a proven track record of developing and dependably supplying aesthetically superior, responsibly made colored glass products.

I have always felt that the true value of an art glass product is about more than just producing acceptable physical properties. In my book, excellence in visual and aesthetic properties is the ultimate goal of the art glass production effort.  Having known the founders of OGT since its inception almost 25 years ago, I know their company culture embodies the unusual combination of aesthetic understanding and a well-grounded, responsible manufacturing ethic. These are the qualities I know are required to produce colored glass products that rise to the artistic level. Although there were other credible candidates who sought to acquire Uroboros and its technology in recent months, it was this aspect of the OGT culture that put them in the winning seat for me.

I have visited the OGT Tijuana facility and can personally attest to seeing a very clean state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in a new industrial neighborhood of modern electronic, automotive and aerospace manufacturing facilities. It is staffed with well trained, enthusiastic professionals who manage a responsibly equipped production process that is also remarkably supportive of its employees, their families, and their community. The opportunity for synergistic developments from this unique technical and creative collaboration is not only exciting, but truly unmatched in the history of our industry.

In the next few months production at Uroboros in Portland will shut down one department at a time to prepare equipment for the move. As each department is moved to the OGT facility it will start up again as soon as practical. Initial production will focus on items out of stock the longest and most in demand. I and several long term Uroboros employees will be closely involved with the start-up of Uroboros production in Mexico, and together we are going to give it our best effort to ensure that product quality does not suffer from the move.

The current timetable, subject to change, includes discontinuing sheet production in Portland by Feb 1st, and restarting in Mexico the first week of May, only a three month gap.  Sheet products will be sold from our considerable inventories in Portland until end of April, and then remaining inventories and new production will be purchasable from Uroboros/OGT starting mid-May. Frit, stringer, noodle, rods and other accessory items will be produced in Portland from remaining supplies until early May, and thereafter remaining inventories and new production will by purchasable from Uroboros/OGT starting in early June, only a one month gap.

Current Uroboros distributors are encouraged to contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for initial product inquiries and orders.  This is particularly true for items that are no longer available in Portland, since those will be the first produced at the new location. I’m sure I haven’t been able to answer all your questions, but as things develop we will provide updates. In the meantime, if you have a job to quote or other specific concerns about timing and product availability, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

It has been a great 44 years of art glass production here in Portland. We, the craftspeople at Uroboros, have learned much from you about the often subtle visual properties that you and your customers sought in art glass. We consider ourselves lucky to have been intimately involved in so many superb art projects. It has been an educational, exciting, and rewarding experience in arts based manufacturing, combining old-world craftsmanship with modern technology. This has indeed been a year of unprecedented changes to our industry, but I and several other long-timers at Uroboros will continue to be involved with the Uroboros brand, and we do look forward to seeing and working with you in our new capacities in the future.

Vitromusée Romont exhibition

The Vitromusée Romont and the neighbouring Museum of Wallpaper in the castle of Mézières are organizing an exhibition of contemporary glass. Thematic concept: glass design for everyday use. The exhibition will take place 22 April – 1 November 2017.

Thematic concept: glass design for everyday use Back to the roots: functional glass objects. The exhibition will not be concerned with ‘glass art’, but rather artistically or technically outstanding glass objects that have been made to be used. It represents an attempt to attract a broader and younger target audience to the world of well-designed glass. Glass objects that one can use throughout one’s life and for a variety of purposes (‘from baby bottle to urn’). Objects that are original, innovative, highly artistic or even playful – but always created for a practical reason. In this context, an object whose qualities are only artistic, aesthetic or ethereal cannot be considered ‘utilitarian’. All techniques will be represented, including stained glass, flat glass and jewellery. The exhibition will incorporate individual objects and small series of objects, as well as industrially manufactured items, all of which will come directly from the artists or workshops – no galleries or agents will be involved. Preference will be given to newer objects, but older works will also be accepted. For logistical reasons, preference will also be given to smaller objects. The exhibition will present the objects in everyday situations. The works will be available for sale from the museum shops and possibly also online. Prices must be low or affordable.

French facade workers evicted from Saint Gobain tower

The French aluminum carpentry companies are indignant at being "evicted," they say, from the construction of the glass facades of the Saint-Gobain tower in La Défense by the Vinci group, who preferred a sub- Turkish dealer at "abnormally low" prices.

"The French facade workers evicted from the tower Saint-Gobain shout their anger," said in a statement Tuesday the professional organization SNFA, which represents some 185 companies that design, manufacture and install aluminum joinery (verandas, windows, facades).

The Vinci group, in charge of the construction of this 39-storey tower under construction in the La Défense business district, "recently chose the Turkish company Metal Yapi" to create the glass façades of the structure, Reports the SNFA.

"The reasons for this choice: again abnormally low prices!", The organization said, denouncing "another blow to French companies, once again deprived of an important market".

Today Metal Yapi "has in France only an establishment of less than 5 people who is not even affiliated to the collective agreement of the building," says the organization.

Thus, according to the SNFA, "all the components of the facades as well as the labor of manufacturing and installation will therefore be entirely of origin + outside Europe +".

"For us, it is impossible to work, respecting all the rules, under the financial conditions imposed by the general companies", major groups of construction and their subsidiaries, told AFP Jean-Luc Marchand, SNFA.

"Our facades will die," he warned.

Some 25,000 m2 of glass facades are to be built on the site of this tower, designed by the French architect Valode and Pistre, whose delivery is planned for the third quarter of 2019.

Metal Yapi, "subcontractor of Bouygues for the facades of the building Le Monde, has already defended the chronicle in 2004," says the SNFA.

This project had given rise to "deplorable conditions of work and accommodation of its employees, which made controversy" says the organization, which sees the consequence of "incredible price discrepancies with French companies."

For the SNFA, these cases of subcontracting foreign to the "disastrous" consequences are "far from being isolated and become even a common practice".

Thus, the façade of the Carpe diem tower, entrusted to the Chinese company Yuanda and also located in La Défense, suffered from "major leaks" which required a clogging for several months, reports Mr. Marchand.

As for the facade of Tower D2, it was entrusted to the subcontractor Kyotec, which itself "subcontracted all its manufacture in Turkey" and filed for bankruptcy before the end of the project.

For the SNFA, French companies are "in a position to offer services of much better quality (...) provided they receive a fair remuneration".

Press release Neptun at Glasstec

A “good show” is where high-quality products meet interested prospects, where a product roadmap turns out to match the ideas and needs of customers for the future of their companies.

This is what happened at Neptun’s booth at Glasstec.

The new module Quickdrill T8, with the fast automatic tools exchange in only 8 seconds, has been warmly welcomed by the visitors as the natural evolution of the successful series Quick, offering high productivity, flexibility and low maintenance costs.  During the show, the Line on display processed glass doors with high quality finishing in only 3’30”,  an output that cannot be reached by vertical all-in-one NC centers.

The manifest flexibility and added value of Quickline attracted customers both from smaller companies, where each investment is object of important budget evaluations, and from the big processing players, where quality and automation of the processes rule above all.

Upon explicit request of the market, Quickdrill is now also available for glass sheets, up to 2600 x 4000mm and will be expanded in the near future also to handle larger dimension.

Diverses recompenses ont été attribuées

Beside the Quickline, symbol of innovation and optimization, Neptun displayed the mitering machine Rock 14-45 and the straight-line edger Rock 8, which stand for tradition and solid know-how, clearly enriched with significant technical improvements (such as the long life track or ETS squaring system) typical of all the products conceived and engineered by Stefano Bavelloni and his team at Neptun’s.

Finally, the range of washing machines was represented by the horizontal washer Tornado HP 1600, always successful thanks to the technical solutions it incorporates, like the automatic system for control and management of the water and the patented energy saving device “Ecosave”.  Visitors were surprised when, standing quietly by the machine for a demo, they realized that the air blowers were actually on. Even more surprised when they heard that the Ecosave mode can save up to 70% of the energy consumption of a standard washer.

A good show is also where people meet people they like to collaborate with. And this also happened at Neptun’s booth.  On Thursday afternoon, at the Partners’ Party, the owners of the company, Stefano Bavelloni, Matteo Rolla and Simona Bavelloni, in the valued presence of Dino Bavelloni, awarded the partners who left their mark on the last business year. The first award was for Yousri Elsayed Sanafi, who distinguished himself for the outstanding results obtained in Egypt as a new partner to Neptun in 2016. He actually managed to have another contract signed just a couple of minutes before the beginning of the Partners’ Party!

The price for the largest single sales contract in 2016 was handed over to Mr. Farjallah and François El Khoury of Theral, Neptun’s agent for Middle East.  Matodi, in the person of John Lloyd and Steve White, was awarded a very special recognition: since the beginning of 2016, they have been selling more than 1 machine per calendar week in the USA and Canada. Finally, the machine n° 600, a Tornado HP 2064 was sold earlier this year in France, by Pascal Royannais of Intermac France, to Verrerie Aurys, a company of the group Saint Gobain Glassolutions.

The awards ceremony was followed by a cocktail party, open to customers, dealers and other friends, to share a warm and friendly moment, just enjoying to be there all together. Ready to take off for more good business.

BAVELLONI S.p.A. again GLASSTEC 2016

Nouveau centre d’usinage NRG 420 POWER JET à Glasstec 2016
