Technical mosaic
The mosaic technique allows for drawings, frescoes, friezes, flooring ... by assembling small pieces of various materials. The different materials are used such as: pieces of clear or colored glass, silver, wood, shells, various stones ... These often called tesserae are breaking or recycled materials can be used as such or re-cut. But it is also used manufactured materials for this purpose such as Briare enamel (available in a thickness of 3 cm and forty different colors) of the Venetian smalt (in this case with the choice almost infinite shades in a thickness d a cm).
The material used will depend on its availability, but also on the desired application (soil mosaics made of hard stone wear-resistant, resistant to mosaic pool water and treatment products, interior or exterior mosaics ...) .
The components of the mosaic are glued to the substrate using suitable products (cements, coatings, various adhesives ...)
The mosaic technic is to form patterns, figures, friezes ... from broken and cut pieces, multicolored, called tesserae or are breaking (for the broken tiles) and assembled using putty or plaster. Ceramic fragments can be used, stone, glass paste or marble (hard crystalline rock which is suitable for floor tiles), enamels Briare (3 mm thick and more than 35 different colors), or Venetian smalt (about 1 cm thick and several hundred colors). But you can also use pebbles, shells, broken mirrors, slate ...
Three different techniques
The choice is made depending on the carrier, destination and size of mosaic:
• the direct method should be done in situ and is to directly bond the tiles in place on the support
• the direct method on thread (there appeared 20) is realized as a first step in the workshop: the tesserae are glued to the pre place on a frame of fiberglass which is then attached to the final support in situ . This technique, often used to create large sets or frescoes, can deliver a ready mosaic to ask and thus reduce the response time on site
• the indirect method (invented in the mid 19th century) is also carried out in the workshop: the pattern to be made is reversed from the original because the tesserae are glued upside down on a temporary support, usually kraft paper. In some cases, a wooden frame, fixed around the mosaic will then be used as formwork for casting a mortar bed. After drying, the mosaic is returned, kraft paper is removed and attached the mosaic in one piece on site. If the direct method, one can play on the thickness of material to give relief effects, the indirect method, she instead favors a completely flat surface even with different material thicknesses. What is interesting to make table tops or floor tiles
Mortar or tile adhesive
And are breaking the tesserae are glued using a mortar made from a volume of cement to one volume of sieved river sand (0.2 mm diameter), while the added water. To slow the setting time (in the case of small-sized tiles), it is possible to add one or two non-hydraulic lime volumes to this mortar as well as natural pigments (oxides or land) to color when no gasket Finishing is planned. Today, this binder - that requires a mastery of oeuvre- commissioning time is increasingly neglected in favor of industrial adhesives mortars identical to those used by tilers, offering different time taken.
Stone extraction techniques
Three main techniques in France
Depending on the nature of the deposit and the characteristics of the material, the carrier is selected mainly between three techniques:
- Cutting (sawing) to the diamond wire
- Cutting to Shearer
- Operating with explosives.
Other more marginal techniques exist: water jet cutting, cutting with hydraulic corners ...
The diamond wire sawing
A cable, consisting of two or three steel strands alternate twist, on which are crimped diamond beads. This variable length cable moves over return pulleys driven by a machine installed in the career and allows the cutting block. .
Cup Shearer
The cutter is a specific kind of the stone saw provided with an arm pivoting about an axis. On this arm runs a chain equipped with tungsten carbide teeth or diamond pellets for sawing vertically or horizontally stone bench. The cutting height can reach up to 5 meters.
Operation with explosives
The carrier punches of about 3 cm diameter holes. They are then packed with explosives that will act by gas expansion. The amount is calculated to avoid damaging the block and protect the integrity of the stone. This technique is commonly practiced in the granite quarries and sandstone.
It is easy to recognize the blocks that have been extracted in this way.
New size change on the market of the marble funeral in France.
Roc Eclerc Group has been bought by one of the major players in the market for funeral marble Funecap the group.
